Magdalena Martinez-Huerta and her brother Lauro opened EL GALLO BAKERY in 1949. Nowadays, Magdalena’s son Jesus Jesus G. Huerta is the mastermind behind El Gallo Bakery.

The food business was in the family’s blood; Jesus grandfather owned bakeries, ice cream shops and cantinas among other business in Guadalajara, Jalisco Mexico.
Magdalena decided to come to the US and opened a shop in the East of Los Angeles. It was a challenge working with American ingredients, even the weather was a challenge, yeast is very temperamental.
The first store was much smaller and it was located where Long Beach freeway overpasses stand today. It was there where Magdalena developed all the recipes with support of brother Lauro.

Eventually, Magdalena decided to go back to Mexico a raised her children leaving a niece in charge of El Gallo Bakery. At the age of 18 Jesus came back to run the family business. The talent to run the bakery and the taste for pan dulce was inherent to him. Nowadays, El Gallo bakes the bread the same way Magdalena did it 60 years ago, maintaining its flavor and the same customer services that made EL Gallo a legend of East Los Angeles.

EL GALLO BAKERY wants to thank all the people that came to our 60th Anniversary on February 1 2009. Sunday was a great day. A day full of surprises, friends and fun, almost 700 people make it to the event through out the day.

Local vendors had the chance to show and sell their craftsmanship and local bands to play their music. People enjoy great food and drinks and 7 6 huge piñatas were broken. El Gallo gave away prices, gift cards, t-shirts, bags and many other goodies. 

Sunday was not only a chance to celebrate EL Gallo Bakery’s 60’s birthday, but also a day for the community of East Los Angeles to gather under the same roof. It was a day of cultural exchange and celebration.
